Experience senior living at the best retirement homes in Montreal

While we might still be rocking this youthful glow (thanks, filters!), it’s never too early to start planning for the future.

That’s why we’ve been digging into Montreal’s retirement homes. So when the time comes, we can trade in our avocado toast for applesauce with a side of bingo.

Join us on this journey, where we’ll find the places that’ll make our golden years shine brighter than a freshly polished denture.

How much do retirement homes in Calgary charge?

On average, retirement homes in Calgary charge $4,453 per month. However, the final price may change depending on the level of care required, the type of accommodation, and additional services offered.

How We Chose

Amenities and activities – We looked for facilities that provide a wide range of amenities and engaging activities. We want to ensure residents have access to a fulfilling lifestyle that promotes physical, mental, and social well-being.
Care quality – We focused on homes offering professional and compassionate care, with well-trained staff and personalised care plans.
Safety and accessibility – We reviewed each home’s safety measures, accessibility features, and emergency protocols to ensure a secure and comfortable environment for residents.
Resident satisfaction – We considered feedback from residents and their families. We prioritised facilities known for creating a positive living experience and strong community bonds.

We have to say, La Residence Steger really makes you feel at home in Saint-Laurent. With a blend of independent and semi-autonomous living options, they’ve got a setup that balances freedom with the right amount of support.

Prices start at around $3,495 per month. This covers everything from delicious chef-prepared meals to light housekeeping – even an on-site hair salon.

When we stopped by, we loved how welcoming the spaces felt, both indoors and out. Whether you’re up for a social bingo game or a quiet stroll in their beautiful outdoor areas, there’s always something to do.

  • Flexible living options
  • Comprehensive amenities
  • Active social calendar
  • Beautiful spaces
  • Complimentary transportation

Cons

  • A few reports of poor customer service

Provides enjoyable Sunday afternoon entertainment for residents

“Two friends and I recently visited the Steger residence.  On arrival, we were welcomed by Wendy and Toni.  I was impressed how accepting and warm the two were.  Often, staff mirrors administration.  At lunch, the employee was polite, pleasant and efficient (No institutionalisation here!)  We were given a tour, treated to a deliceous lunch, and invited to a Sunday afternoon entertainment which we enjoyed along with the residents!  My 2 friends danced as did a few residents!  The building is fairly new, nicely decorated and exudes a warmth. Delivers impressive apartment layouts with excellent floor plans

“I went to visit and was very pleased with what I saw. The apartments are really nice, excellent floor plans, great dining room facility. I was really impressed with the garden in the back of the building and the staff. I was toured through the facility and explained how it is “a community not an apartment building “. Wendy Segal seemed to know all community members by name. Thank you for opening my eyes.”

living. Located near the Olympic Park, it’s more like a luxury resort than a traditional residence.

When we visited, the rooftop terrace with its greenhouse caught our eye. It’s perfect for those who enjoy gardening or just relaxing with a view.

They also have a bistro lounge, cinema room, and even a bowling alley. It’s like they’ve thought of everything to keep the vibe lively and engaging. Some of the residents we spoke with were thrilled about the fitness centre and the pool area that’s complete with a sauna and steam room.

For those who need a bit more care, the Soignium wing offers a comforting environment with personalised support.

Each unit is thoughtfully designed with its own climate control and even a personal safe.

Additionally, we love how easy they make it to manage appointments with their on-site medical centre and concierge services.

Maintains exceptionally clean common areas

“My aunt has lived at this residence for several months. I have never seen my aunt so happy. The employees are so charming and very warm. The common areas are extremely very clean. My aunt told me last week that she couldn’t participate in all the activities because there really aren’t too many. She loves eating in the dining room because the food is exquisite and the servers are very pleasant and accommodating. I recommend all seniors to live at this residence.”

We really love how this facility strikes the right balance for semi-autonomous seniors. The vibe is warm and welcoming. And with rates starting around $1,470 a month, you’re getting solid value without sacrificing care.

What we like here is that each resident gets a real sense of personalised attention – it’s not just about the services but the relationships they build.

When we visited, the atmosphere felt genuinely homey. Residents were chatting over meals, enjoying group activities, and just generally having a good time.

The staff was so attentive, and it was clear they know everyone’s preferences and needs. We also noticed how well they manage dementia care, ensuring those residents are comfortable and safe.

Our only small suggestion? We do wish they had their own website, which would make it much easier for potential residents and families to schedule appointments

Pros

  • Personalised care
  • Homey atmosphere
  • Comprehensive services
  • Specialised dementia care
  • Engaging activities
  • Affordable rates

Cons

  • A few reports of poor professionalism

Offers peace of mind to families with exceptional resident care

“I highly commend Sheppard and James fir their professionalism and commitment to providing a safe, warm and caring environment for their residents. Their amazing staff is fully engaged, compassionate and very kind and are a credit to their profession. We, as family were always welcomed as well and had peace of mind knowing our mom was well looked after. As an anecdote, when our mom once was driven to the hospital via ambulance, the paramedics were commenting about the cleanliness and how well organised the staff were. We couldn’t say enough positive things about Sheppard and James.”

Offers approachable and responsive management

“My sister and I placed our Mom at the Residence in December 2022. We are both very pleased with the Residence. The staff is always friendly and attentive and most importantly very respectful to not only my sister and I, but of course most importantly to our precious Mom. Every time my sister and I visit and leave the residence, we do so with a great piece of mind that our Mom is being extremely well taken care of. The residence’s owner Karen and her son Shaheed are always available to answer and tend to any of our queries and concerns about our Mom. Sheppard and James is A-1 in every way.”

Ensures a compassionate atmosphere for residents

“From my experience, probably the best place you can find in the West-Island of Montreal, so glad my father has chosen this residence, family owned with a caring team, they truly care for your loved ones! The owners are there in their office every day, that alone tells a lot on how much they care. My father was blessed to be able to pass such time in this amazing residence! Definitely recommend it to everyone, and they are really affordable with no surprise fees, compared to others residence I inquired about. I will never thank Monique and Pierre(the owners) and the whole team at Chateau-Pierrefonds enough for the care they provided to my father, and the help and peacefulness they provided to our family! Thank you for everything!”

“My mother has been at Château Pierrefonds for several months, I have noticed a very good nursing service and several other good services, very good quality food, smiling and dedicated staff. I have only good words to say about this place for seniors, I very, very highly recommend this quality residence, but you will have to pay the price.”
