When we were searching for contractors, we mostly found companies that specialise in residential projects. Fortunately, we were able to find DCR Construction, which also has a sizable commercial clientele.

Our team finds them best when it comes to large-scale projects. This is because they have a solid track record in renovating warehouses, multiplex buildings, and offices. 

Their residential offerings are just as good – in particular, we loved that they can assist with handicap-accessible remodelling, something that not a lot of contractors focus on.

On top of top, we appreciate that their contractor network is the largest among those we reviewed. This allows them to source materials fast, often leading to quick turnaround times.

But while project management is considerably good, our members noticed that not all their workers are great with communication. They often fail to give updates. 

On the good side, the clients who shared these stories are in a small minority.

Nothing makes us happier than seeing a contractor who just gets the job done, and MTL Contractors just left us satisfied. The range of interior renovations they offer is top-notch, including work on bathrooms, kitchens, basements, and main floors.

Following their process, we saw how in-depth their design consultation is. Plus, the estimating is accurate and fair, as the costs don’t go beyond the city’s average rates. In short, everything feels seamless from start to finish.

The only hiccup, though, is that you may struggle with scheduling, considering their availability isn’t as flexible as the rest. But if they do have a good schedule, consultations are scheduled within 1 to 2 days of inquiry.

We advise trying to book a schedule during non-peak seasons (e.g. winter months).

Finally, our team members all agreed that the quality of workmanship is consistent. There are no glaring signs of damage or incomplete work, and we were happy to see that specific design requests were followed.

If communication is a make-or-break deal for you, we think you’ll like Ecosense. What our team loved about this contractor is how easy it is to communicate with them.

When we talked to former clients, they shared how they were always kept in the loop. The team consistently send updates even if the client isn’t on site. The planning stages are well documented too, which reassures us with accountability.

Another common positive description we heard while speaking with clients was Ecosense’s willingness to adapt to changes mid-project. Some contractors can be stringent, so this was a plus for us, considering the budget isn’t inflated in the process.

We just have a bit of an issue about the quality of their services, as we found an instance in which the cabinets were uneven. Fortunately, this is only one case among the many other glowing results we saw.

For those who value high-end results, we’re sure you’ll love NDG Restoration and Painting. As their name suggests, they mostly take on painting projects, both interior and exterior.

However, the team is also knowledgeable about structural demands such as custom framing and steel beam installation. We find this is a helpful advantage for clients with more demanding renovation needs.

Their work is consistent, as confirmed by the clients we interviewed. In particular, we noted how precise their installations are and how clean the work site is during and after the project.

Clients we spoke with also agreed that the company is able to bring their vision to life. Both cosmetic and functional improvements were followed according to specific requests.

If only they could improve their follow-up process after an estimate visit, that would be great. Sometimes clients don’t update after the call, and we wish to see improvements soon.

We liked how thorough Renovations Westside is. Unlike larger firms that juggle various projects simultaneously, Westside only takes on one job at a time.

This approach ensures that jobs are finished within the promised timeline, which our team was able to confirm by looking at their records. 

Plus, the workmanship is consistently good. Clients emphasised that even their last-minute changes were addressed. 

According to their reps, they guarantee the best price on signed contracts. We agree to an extent, as their rates are competitive. That said, they’re definitely not the most affordable in the city.

The good thing, though, is that the work is good and comes with a 5-year warranty on all completed jobs. Their jolly and friendly approach is also a big bonus in the bigger picture.

The only negative report we heard involved delays due to permitting issues, but we don’t consider it a major red flag because the concern is something beyond the company’s control. And it being only one case still appears as a positive thing for us.
