The spots for the 11 best banh mi in Montreal that’ll turn you into a sandwich snob

One Sunday, my friend and I were reminiscing about our spontaneous trip to Vietnam. From Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi, we savoured every moment of our getaway—and yes, that included indulging in every single delicious banh mi we could get our hands on.

Those memories sparked a serious craving for the perfect banh mi. Since a return trip to Vietnam wasn’t in the cards just yet, we decided to explore the city in search of the best banh mi it had to offer.

With a few bills in hand and a hunger for adventure, we hopped from one spot to the next. While some places didn’t quite hit the mark, others delivered that authentic banh mi taste we were longing for.

Check out our new faves!

1. Thé Perlé Banh Mi

Address: 4314 Saint-Denis St

Contact Details: +15145740828

Operating Hours: Monday – Sunday: 11:00 AM –  7:00 PM | Tuesday: 11:00 AM – 8:00 PM

Price: $

When I first visited The Perle Banh Mi, I was instantly charmed by its neon glow and quirky decor. It has old wine bottles in the space that are seemingly repurposed as art!

When it comes to food, their pork banh mi is a hit with the regulars. Patrons often say they love the seasoned pork and the tangy pickled carrots. No wonder the place is always packed—and sometimes, the pork banh mi is even sold out.

As for their chicken banh mi, I loved the tender, well-seasoned chicken. However, the mayonnaise felt unnecessary, and their pickled veggies slightly overpowered the bread-to-filling ratio.

Their drinks were just as impressive. Their house-made fruit tea was refreshing. Meanwhile, their brown sugar boba had just the right amount of sweetness, making it a great match with their bahn mis.

2. Marché Hung Phat

Address: 7099 Saint Denis St

Contact Details: +15142721332

Operating Hours: Monday – Sunday: 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM | Tuesday: Closed

Price: $

Marché Hung Phat is where I go for banh mi that just gets it right. If you’re vegetarian, you’re in luck! They have a mushroom banh mi that’s just as filling as their meat counterpart.

And for vegan friends, you can simply request their tofu banh mi without mayo—no need to ask beforehand, you can mention it as you order.

Beyond the food, Marché Hung Phat is a favourite stop for its unbeatable prices. At around $6.50 for a banh mi, you’re getting incredible value for some of the tastiest sandwiches in the city. You even get a chance to try their delicious Vietnamese iced coffee!

Plus, even when the lines feel intimidating on busy days, the service remains fast. So, if you need a quick meal, consider dropping by.

3. Bánh Mì Fusion

Address: 7360 Boul Langelier

Contact Details: +14383808020

Operating Hours: Sunday – Thursday: 11:30 AM – 8:00 PM | Friday – Saturday: 11:30 AM – 9:00 PM

Price: $

For banh mi that doesn’t skimp on the meat, Bánh Mì Fusion should be on your list. Their take on the classic banh mi includes their best-selling bulgogi beef banh mi, which has a slight sweetness—typical of most Korean-style beef meals.

If you prefer more familiar flavours, the BBQ pork banh mi is just as good. They also have their well-loved tofu banh mi, which is ideal for vegans.

To complete your meal, you shouldn’t skip their pandan coffee. It’s a hit with customers, and for good reason—it’s rich, creamy, and has a distinct nutty flavour that makes it a perfect pairing with the sandwiches.

But if bubble tea is more of your thing, they’ve got that too. Given how fast the service is, you could probably get back in line for seconds before finishing your sandwich!

4. Sandwich Mi Bao

Address: 1073 Saint Denis St

Contact Details:

Operating Hours: Saturday – Thursday: 7:30 AM – 3:00 PM | Friday: 7:30 AM – 3:00 PM

Price: $$

Located near Old Port, Sandwich Mi Bao is a beloved spot for some of the best bahn mis in the city. Their pork banh mi is loaded with tender meat, and you’ll simply fall in love with the veggies—they’re always fresh with just the right spice.

The tofu banh mi is another must-try. The crispy tofu is coated in a sweet sauce, complemented by tangy pickled vegetables.

One thing to note is that their pricing is on the higher side for a banh mi, ranging from $12 to $16 per sandwich. On the bright side, their portions are generous. However, if you’re on a budget, you might consider sharing one with a friend.

The place is also quite small, so scoring a seat during busy hours can be challenging. But if you come at the right time, make sure to settle in their outdoor seating area—the atmosphere is much better there.

5. Soleil de Saigon

Could you ever turn down fresh banh mi? Me neither! Here at Soleil de Saigon, they make bahn mis to order, giving them a wonderfully crispy texture that’s just perfect for the golden baguettes.

At just $8.50 per order, it’s a steal. The meats are flavourful, while the pickled toppings have just the right amount of tanginess.

The portion is just right as well. However, you might need a second order if you want to feel completely full.

Their Vietnamese iced coffee is also a must-try. It has a much bolder profile than other places, yet it’s creamier without being overly sweet. It’s the perfect pairing for banh mi, especially if you’re having it for lunch.

6. Bun Mam Ninh Kieu

Operating Hours: Monday – Sunday: 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM

For a no-fuss, classic bahn mi, you’ll enjoy Bun Mam Ninh Kieu. Their grilled chicken banh mi is a crowd favourite. The bun is soft and airy, with just the right crispness on the outside.

If you want something with a bit of a kick, try their curry banh mi. The spice is not overpowering, but you might want to pair it with sautéed lemongrass tofu or vermicelli noodles for a nice balance.

They also offer General Tao tofu banh mi, which is a great option if you’re bored with meat fillings. And whatever you choose, don’t miss their Vietnamese iced coffee—it’s the drink that ties it all together.

7. H.O Sandwich Vietnamien

Address: 7178 Saint Denis St

Contact Details: +15142718668

Operating Hours: Thursday – Tuesday: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Price: $

When I spotted the $6 bahn mi special at H.O Sandwich Vietnamien, I couldn’t resist stepping inside (who wouldn’t want to at that price?). And I knew I’d made the right choice because I finally found the best spot for a banh mi takeout.

If you want to take your classic to the next level, you can upgrade to their banh mi with extra meat—it’s just $7. The bread is soft, pairing perfectly with the flavourful meats. And yes, the portion is generous, making it excellent value for money.

It’s located in a busy area near Jean Talon, so parking can be a challenge. That’s why I recommend coming here only if you’re getting one for takeout—the service is fast, so you don’t have to worry.

8. Bánh Mì Madame Ly

Directions: https://maps.app.goo.gl/85cxgwuLHaro1mip7

Address: 766 Rue Beaubien E

Contact Details: +15143794500

Operating Hours: Monday – Sunday: 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM

Price: $

For bahn mi that won’t disappoint when it comes to the meat, Bánh Mì Madame Ly is a great choice. One of their signature offerings is the General Tao banh mi. It features crispy, breaded chicken drizzled in a flavourful General Tao sauce that delivers a spicy kick.

If you’re not too fond of spice, the barbecued banh mi is another excellent option. This one comes with pork that’s so juicy it bursts in your mouth with every bite. Plus, the crunchy veggies make it a totally addictive combination.

Madame Ly’s prices are impressively affordable, with many banh mi options under $10. This makes it a great spot for a quick lunch without breaking the bank. However, considering the location, it’s best to drop by if you’re grabbing one for takeout.

9. Hoang Oanh Sandwich

Directions: https://maps.app.goo.gl/HupaPz45uZNnXfs1A

Address: 1071 St Laurent Blvd

Contact Details: +15149540053

Operating Hours: Monday – Sunday: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Price: $

Hoang Oanh Sandwich is a must-visit when it comes to the variety of filling options. From the classic cold cuts to the grilled chicken and special varieties, there’s something to suit every taste.

What’s nice is that they also have traditional Vietnamese snacks, so you can definitely mix and match for the perfect meal.

While the shop is small with no seating area, it’s perfect for a quick grab-and-go meal. The service is fast, and you can expect to get your food in just a few minutes!

They even have a loyalty card. The best perk? Buy 10 sandwiches, and you get one free! Don’t worry—banh mi prices here start at just $5.50, so you can splurge.

10. Bánh Mì Banh Yiu

Website: http://banhmibanhyiu.com/

Address: 255a Rue Saint-Viateur O

Contact Details: +15143791400

Operating Hours: Monday – Sunday: 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Price: $

Bánh Mì Banh Yiu offers a unique twist on the classic Vietnamese sandwich. Although the name suggests authenticity, their pork banh mi is quite different. The meat resembles pulled pork doused in BBQ sauce rather than the traditional Vietnamese charcuterie or grilled pork.

Their tofu banh mi also surprises with an unexpected flavour profile. Unlike the usual tofu preparation found in Vietnamese sandwiches, this place opts for an Indian-inspired sauce that perfectly complements the tofu.

The braised pork banh mi is another favourite that keeps regulars from coming back, thanks to the incredible tenderness of the meat. If the pork is too savoury for your taste, pair it with some of the homemade cookies and a refreshing lemonade to balance the flavours.

11. Bánh Mì Hanoi

Media credit banhmihanoi514

Website: https://banhmihanoi.ca/

Address: 2499 Rue Jean-Talon E

Contact Details: +15147232858

Operating Hours: Tuesday – Friday: 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM | Saturday – Sunday: 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Price: $

For around $10, Bánh Mì Hanoi offers great value for their well-packed and flavoured banh mis. Like the classics, the bread they use is crunchy but not so heavy that it overpowers the bold flavours of the meat.

The favourite here is the grilled pork banh mi, well-loved for its house-made sauce. This gives the sandwich a much creamier profile, unlike other banh mis with a veggie-heavy approach.

Vegetarian options are also excellent. The tofu banh mi is the top choice for plant-based eaters. The tofu is perfectly cooked, while the carrots and radishes add a satisfying crunch that contrasts beautifully with the soft tofu.
